This Week's Summary: Thoughts on Politics, Media, and Film
Today’s newsletter brings something a little different – three different stories about recent developments in the world of politics, film, and media. This issue also marks the first time that Iana Dontcheva, my brilliant better-half, is joining in the fun with her first contribution.
As someone who grew up and came of age outside the United States, Iana has always had a unique perspective on American politics. This week, she responds to a Trump advisor’s assertion that “separation of church and state is a myth perpetuated by liberals” with an insightful analysis about the importance of religious pluralism.
And in the world of media, I write about news deserts, and specifically how the disappearance of local news negatively impacted a New York congressional race in 2018.
And for those who are only here for film-stuff… never fear, we’ve got you covered. Also included is my reflection on the recent closing of the Art Theater, the last arthouse movie theater in Champaign, Illinois, where I grew up.
As always, if this stuff gets your motor running, please subscribe, comment, and share. More is on the way soon!
